What are the job opportunities after a master’s in public health in India?
Answer By Arif Raza: MPH in India largely finds job opportunities with Government and Development partners (NGOs working in healthcare).
In government, jobs are largely under various health schemes of central or state government, like NHM, RNTCP, Malaria Eradication, Nutrition, etc. Most public health student gets absorbed in NHM (national health mission) of different states and center. Starting salary is like 30k-40k per month, which eventually increases to 60k-70k in 2–3 years.
A large number of public health people also work for big and multinational NGOs for their healthcare-related projects or program. Some names are UNICEF, FHI, Access, UNDP, CARE, etc. All these organizations are big and get funding from foreign countries. Most public health people work there as consultants and are paid better than what government pays. Generally, 60–70 thousand can go over 1 lac for the experienced one.
One catch in both government and NGOs is that almost all jobs are contract based and there is no surety of continuation. The contract can range from a few months to up to 3 years. For this reason, most public health people keep changing jobs to enter into a new contract.
After about 10 years of experience, one may enter into a permanent job with any of these NGOs, but chances are still low.
The number of opportunities is usually high and there are always open vacancies at NGOs and the government side. But the supply is also high making it competitive. Having a qualification from a reputed institute helps very much for succeeding in this sector.

Answer By Rajesh Parekh: It has been almost 25 years since I passed my MBBS. Community Medicine (earlier called Preventive and Social Medicine)was one of the subjects and its scope was slowly evolving into the field of public health medicine.
Zoom to 2018 and we see different institutions offering Masters in Public Health.
Public Health is defined as “the art and science of preventing disease, prolonging life, and promoting health through the organized efforts of society” (Acheson, 1988; WHO)
So while those who do opt for PUBLIC HEALTH will definitely have a career in the traditional fields of public health (epidemiology, biostatistics, preventing illnesses due to water, sanitation issues, mental health, etc)
Basically, Public health and Clinical Medicine are like two banks of a river with Community Medicine bridging the gap. In India, with time this arrangement will eventually bring a community perspective into health care and help create a healthy India.
Hope this helps.
